MARVEL NOW!

This has been a crazy week for Marvel Comics. They announced a relaunch of their universe, Marvel NOW!, and The Amazing Spider-Man hit theaters with a bang.

The first four titles revealed for the relaunch are Avengers, New Avengers, Uncanny Avengers, and All-New X-Men.

Jonathan Hickman will be taking over the writing duties for Avengers and New Avengers. He is well known for his deep intricate plots. His books will focus on a new outlook for the team and the realization and repentance of past mistakes. Avengers will also be featuring 18+ Avengers at a time (as of right now, who knows what the future holds).

Rick Remender and John Cassaday will be taking the reins on Uncanny Avengers and are sure to knock it out of the park. Remender tends to focus on characterization and relationships. This book is going to be all about the building of relationships between Avengers and X-Men. I can’t think of a better writer for this job and I have loved Cassaday’s art since Planetary.

The title All-New X-Men is silly to me because it should be All-Old or All-Young. Somehow, probably Phoenix involved, the original five X-Men, the ones Stan Lee and Jack Kirby worked on, come from the past to exist in the world of today. I wonder what kind of impact this will have on the continuity of present-day Marvel, but let’s just hope they do the time-travel part correctly (more on this when you click over). This will be written by *gulp* Brian Michael Bendis. I hope this is more Ultimate Spider-Man than Avengers, but only time will tell.

I think that 2012 is the year of Marvel Comics because of their two big summer block-busters, the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man, and their relaunch. I hope it stays that way.
